Charlie the garden fairy would wake up every evening just as princess Laura and Prince James would close their eyes. Every evening she would stretch her arms and her wings and her legs and yawn the biggest yawn “no a much bigger yawn than that” for when Charlie the garden fairy yawns, it’s the biggest yawn in the whole wide world! Yes even bigger than a hippopotamus and when Charlie the garden fairy yawns all the flowers bend over, the leaves swirl around and around and the bees stop buzzing, which as you can imagine is the funniest sight that anyone can see“ bees not buzzing indeed“. Mammies and daddies think it’s the wind but its not, its Charlie the garden fairy yawning her enormous yawn. In fact when Charlie the garden fairy yawns her enormous yawn it sends Princess Laura and prince James in to the land of dreams where they can run jump and play and fly as high as they like. All the flowers fall fast asleep too, so that they can look as beautiful as they can be the following day. The birds return to their nests shuffle their tail feathers tuck their heads under their wings and fall fast asleep. Sometimes on very special nights the clouds would vanish the moon would shine as big and as bright as she could and all the stars would glisten and sparkle in the night sky. These were Charlie’s favourite nights for she flew up as high as she could smiled and marvelled at the wonderful sight. She could see all the garden fairies for miles and miles around fleeting around their gardens, leaving trails of sparkling glitter. Like thousands of shooting stars in the night sky, cleaning and sprucing singing their special songs, their magical songs. The songs that Selene queen of the garden fairies had given them. This made Charlie the happiest garden fairy in the world. Then she would float back down like a feather falling gently to the ground remembering that Selene had not given her a song. This made Charlie very sad for Charlie did everything that was expected of her. Every evening she would tidy the flower beds, tidy up the leaves and talk to the seedlings, which needed a lot of love and encouragement, so that they could grow up to be all that they could be. Oh! Why has Selene queen of the garden fairies not given me a song? All the other garden fairies have such beautiful songs and all I can do is hum. “Hum hum hum” I don’t want to hum any more. Just then Flames the flaming dragon arrived, what’s all this commotion? Charlie snuffled, wiped her eyes, held back her tears and turned to face Flames, but it was no good. First there was lip tremor, then their was a little sniffle, then the tears that she was trying so hard to hold back, started to flow. It’s not this song business again exclaimed Flames. Then in the most gentlest of tones, he put his arm around Charlie and said,” oh Charlie, your making the weeping willow tree cry, and if you don’t stop it will be called the whaling tree. I told you before, that Queen Selene will give you a song; you just have to be patient. But Flames was thinking it has been a long time, a very long time indeed. I wonder if the queen has forgotten. No, the queen has not forgotten. Selene queen of the garden fairies never forgets. Flames the flaming dragon was about to comfort Charlie by saying that she was a great hummer, for he did not know what else to say. When he suddenly noticed that their was thousands of bright sparkling garden fairy eyes looking down on Charlie and Flames the flaming dragon. They were all smiling and seemed so happy because they knew something that flames the flaming dragon and Charlie the garden fairy did not know. Flames was about to give out when their was a great parting of the glittering eyes. Then their was the sweetest music. Mrs Chop heard the sweet music and hurried over for she knew what was going to happen. Cinders the flaming dragon popped her head out from behind Princess Laura and Prince James’ play castle, all the flowers woke up and stretched their petals as wide as they could. Mr twist and Miss turn wriggled there way out from the depths of the ground to see what was going on for the vibrations they heard interrupted their dance, they were practising for the finals of jive worms the annual dance competition. Charlie looked up with great surprise and noticed queen Selene standing on a maple leaf shaped like a chariot being pulled by six fire flies. As she moved closer, all the garden fairies moved in behind the queen. Charlie turned to flames the flaming dragon, oh flames it’s me it’s me it’s really me as she brushed herself clean “how do I look” as she dropped to her knees and bowing her head so low. Hello flames how you are old friend said Queen Selene as she flapped her wings so gently and floated of her chariot. Hello your majesty replied flames with a smile from ear to ear as he bowed. Hello Charlie said the queen kneeling down beside her. I’m sorry I have not been to see you, it’s just that I needed to find the right song for you and for your garden, for you have a very special garden, A magical garden and finding a song that’s just right has been most difficult.
Queen Selene whispered in Charlie’s ear her special song, her magical song. Charlie the garden fairy’s eyes beamed so bright, that flames the flaming dragon whipped out his sun glasses and said “Cool”. All the other garden fairies were smiling and chatting, well Charlie, what’s your song? Charlie replied’ you will all have to wait until morning. Queen Selene said, it’s ok Charlie, you can sing your song now, just this once. Charlie the garden fairy smiled and started to sing her song, her magical song.

Wake up wake up it’s a beautiful day
The sun is out it’s time to play
The birds are singing what a beautiful day
Come out, come out, come out and play.
Something wonderful started to happen to the garden as Charlie sang her song. The grass got greener, the flower petals grew a little bigger and in some cases they grew new petals. All the other garden fairies were in awe with Charlie the garden fairy’s song and cheered hip hip hurray.
