How do I turn down a date offer but not totally blow the guy off?

So a guy I barely know came up to me at work and said that he was looking for someone to go to the beach with next week. I told him I’d have to check my schedule but I’d let him know next time we work together. First problem is that I’m not even sure it’s a date. Second problem is I barely know him and don’t really want to spend an entire day at the beach with him. I wouldn’t be opposed to a date, but a whole day is a lot and he doesn’t need to see me in a bikini right away. I just want to know how I can make an excuse for not wanting to go to the beach but not turning down the idea entirely…

Tell him that you, because of your friends, have had waaay too much of the beach scene lately, and ask if he’d instead like to try lunch/outdoor movie or a walk somewhere else on that day, or another day if that day’s not good. If you’re trying to wait until you know him better to have any kind of date with him, then you could attempt to *unexpectedly-find-him-completely-by-accident* at one of his hangouts and chat with him a bit, or ask whomever you know about him a bit, without seeming interested, of course.
Good Luck! :)

if you barely know him, going to the beach for an entire day is not a good idea. say, I would love too, I just feel we don’t know each other that well, how does coffee or dinner sound first? or if you dont want to get to know him, just say no thanks.. no harm. Be polite.

how about this…you say "I’m not busy that day, but I was wondering if this is some sort of date?"

and then if he says yes say "ok, well I’d rather not spend an entire day together as a first date, how about the movies or something for starters?"

or if he says no it is not a date…isn’t the best way to get to know somebody spending time with them? so why not spend a whole day together? or you can say that you’re busy part of the day but you can spend a few hours at the beach with him :) good luck
